Garridebs in the News

Good News

As I write this, we have 46 Garridebs located in 20 states, 4 countries and 3 continents. A pretty impressive showing for a group less than a year old.  Our membership covers a wide range of interests and other Sherlockian societies, so from time to time, we’ll use this feature to inform you what some of our fellow Garridebs have been up to recently.

At the March 11th meeting of the Six Napoleons of Baltimore, 44th Garrideb Frank Mentzel became that scion’s Gasogene XXXx.

We have a lot of news to share about fellow Garridebs and the John H Watson Society:

Beth Gallego, the 39th Garrideb, serves as Webmistress for the JHWS and starting with the Fall 2015 issue of The Watsonian, James C. O’Leary, the 28th Garrideb, will assume the role of Editor In Chief for that publication.  Our Inquisitor and 42nd Garrideb, Denny Dobry, just assumed the role of Quizmaster for the JHWS and provides a weekly quiz on the JHWS website.

O’Leary has also just authored the JHWS’ second monograph – Some Observations Upon The Early Writing of John H Watson, MD, 1887-1894.

The current Spring 2015 issue of The Watsonian features many literary contributions from Garridebs. Michael J. Quigley, the 36th Garrideb, was the lead author of Dr John H Watson: A Study in Sidekicks. The 33rd Garrideb, Alexian Gregory, authored Darwin on Dartmoor: Atavism in the Canon. Robert S. Katz, the 29th Garrideb, authored The Watson Touch, while the 40th Garrideb, James McArthur penned Watson’s Bull Pup. O’Leary was the lead author, and Katz was a contributor of Did Holmes Invent Moriarty? Katz and 43rd Garrideb, Robert J. Stek, did a Point / Counterpoint feature called In Eight Words.

The Spring 2015 issue of The Watsonian features over 200 pages of original research.  Membership in the JHWS is $50 for two years and includes 4 issues of their fine journal.

In the most recent episode (#76) of the I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere podcast, that Jim O’Leary fellow was at it again.  In this episode, he was the contestant for the site’s Mental Exaltation quiz feature.  In addition, Bob Katz, was a guest on this episode, talking about his role as a co-editor of Out of the Abyss, the latest book from the BSI Press.

Denny Dobry gave a presentation on Penang Lawyers at the April meeting of Watson’s Tin Box.  In addition, Dobry took on Bob Katz’s role in a debate with Bob Stek from their recent paper in The Watsonian at meetings of the Six Napoleons of Baltimore and the White Rose Irregulars of York.

The 19th Garrideb, Steve Mason, and the 26th Garrideb, Walt Pieper are, respectively, the Third Mate and Helmsman of the Crew of Barque Lone Star and both have contributions to the April issue of The Bilge Pump, the club’s monthly newsletter.

We are always looking for items about our members.  Send news items to our Mycroft for future immortalization in these pages.
