– The Adventure of The Three Garridebs (3GAR)

A few quick items for consideration:

The folks at Yes.Fit, who brought you the Baker Street Bound virtual race medal last year, are doing a new virtual race called The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Pictured to the left is the medal they are issuing for the race, which features a fingerprint and a magnifying glass. There is no mention of Sherlock Holmes nor are there any other design elements such as the deerstalker or pipe.

Both of the two design elements of the medal are fairly common in other mystery and detective stories. Your editor can easily add at least two dozen other numismatic items that feature either a finger print or magnifying glass.

If we were to produce our catalog of Sherlock Holmes numismatic items today, we would not list this medal since it is so generic. If you disagree, please drop your editor a note and offer up your rationale for including this medal in the listings.

For those interested in purchasing this medal, click HERE. They are currently offering a sale until 12 Noon on Monday, April 17th.

Our friends at Watson’s Tin Box will be holding Scintillation of Scions X this June 9-10 in Linthicum, Maryland (near BWI airport). Back in 2014, this event was the first Sherlockian event your editor ever attended. It is one of the best Sherlockian events on the east coast according to many attendees and some would argue for the entire country.  Further details and registration information can be found HERE.

The Rosenbach in Philadelphia is current showing the exhibtion “Clever Criminals and Daring Detectives” until September 1st. We have a large number of Garridebs in the mid-Atlantic region that can make a quick trip to see this display. One of the highights being shown is the original manuscript of The Adventure of the Empty House. HERE Click for more information.

This is a nice wooden puzzle, called Sherlock’s Seven Cent Solution, that was custom designed by a magician named Diamond Jim Tyler . It measures 3.75 x 3.75 inches and fits into the palm of your hand. The seven pennies are included. Begin with an empty board. The object is to start on a vacant circle and to move it once along a connecting line to another empty circle. This must be done with all seven pennies leaving the eighth hole vacant. Most people can do four or five pennies, but doing all seven takes a knack. You can find more information at purchase these games by clicking HERE.

The upcoming week of April 16 – 22, 2017 has been designated National Coin Week by the American Numismatic Association. This year’s theme is Conflict & Courage – Money & The Military in recognition of the centennial of United States entering World War I. National Coin Week is intended to promote coin collecting and we encourage our members and readers to take a few minutes to introduce the joys of coin collecting to others.
