– A Study In Scarlet (STUD)
In A Study In Scarlet, we learn that Dr. Watson was wounded during the Battle of Maiwand. Since Watson was a participant in the Second Anglo – Afghan War, he would have received the Afghanistan Campaign medal.
The Afghanistan Medal is a 36mm round silver medal featuring a veiled effigy of Queen Victoria on the obverse. There are a few reports of bronze versions of the medal existing. The reverse features marching and mounted soldiers with arms, along with an elephant carrying a cannon. The medal hangs from a plain suspender which is attached to the medal with a double toe claw. The ribbon for the medal is 33mm in width and is dark green with broad crimson edges. There are six different silver clasps, awarded for a few of the battles, that could be attached to the ribbons.
