Medallic Portraits of Brigham Young

For over 30 years, until his death, Brigham Young was the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  He led his followers from persecution in Ohio, across the desert and settled them is what is now known as Utah. He is considered the founder of Salt Lake City and was the first Governor of the Utah territory. He was and is still considered a controversial figure due to some of his teachings and policies, such as polygamy.  To learn more about Brigham Young, click here.

In 1972, the Longines Symphonette Society issued a 60 medal series celebrating “Great American Triumphs.” The 38mm medals were struck in sterling silver and had a mintage of 5,000.  The series was known for the highly artistic design of the obverse, while the reverse featured a stock eagle design with a description of that medal’s featured design.

Young was featured on the Utah medal of Medallic Art Company’s Statehood medal series. Struck in .999 silver and bronze, measuring 1.25 inches, the Utah state seal is featured on the reverse.

Brigham Young and the Salt Lake Mormon Temple are featured on this cupro-nickel medal. It measures 38mm across.
