Mr. Holmes Opens In the United States
“… he took two tickets for the theatre …”
– The Adventure of the Bruce Partington Plans (BRUC)
Today was the day that the film Mr. Holmes opened in the United States and your faithful editor attended a matinee to view the film.
I admit that I have not read Mitch Cullin’s A Slight Trick of the Mind, the 2005 book that the movie is based on.
Early on in watching the movie, I had some issues realizing when the movie was in a flashback sequence, but this became easier as the film progressed. I enjoyed the way the filmmakers used Nicholas Rowe of the film Young Sherlock Holmes into the plot of film. My ears perked up when the character of Inspector Gilbert, played by Phil Davis (Jefferson Hope of the first episode of BBC’s Sherlock), first spoke in the film.
I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that numismatic items appeared in two scenes of the movie. I won’t go into detail about them in this post, but we will talk about this more when the film is later released for sale to the general public.
I can recommend that you go to see the movie. From viewing schedules of local movie theaters, it does not appear that it will shown for very long.
Lasty, below we have question and answer session with Sir Ian McKellen and Laura Linney, that took part July 14 as part of the Talks at Google series.
