Garridebs in the News – August 2018

“Under a series of flaming headlines …”

– The Adventure of the Retired Colourman (RETI)

With all of the various projects that our fellow Garridebs are working on, we almost need a full-time editor for our members in the news feature. Let’s not waste any time and get started!

Two Garridebs had articles published in the Spring 2018 issue of the Baker Street Journal. Ross E. Davies, the 61st Garrideb, contributed The Cardboard Boxes, while the 59th Garrideb, Monica Schmidt authored The Curious Case of the Bipolar Detective.

Both Davies and Schmidt were also featured presenters at the Scintillation of Scions XI this June near Baltimore. Both presentations were well received by the attendees.

Davies also contributed The Bimetallic Question in The Valley of Fear in the Summer 2018 edition of the Sherlock Holmes Journal, issued by the Sherlock Holmes Society of London.

At the recent ANA World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia, 7th Garrideb Robert Fritsch, gave a Money Talks presentation on The Lure & Lore of Collecting Medals to a full house of attendees.

Sherlock Holmes on the Rails is the chapter penned by John Baesch, the 25th Garrideb, for the BSI Press’ newest volume of Mobile Holmes: Transportation in the Canon. Those interested in obtaining a copy, can order HERE.

Monica Schmidt will be delivering a presentation, You Have Been on eBay, I Perceive: The Pathology of Sherlockian Collecting, at the upcoming September 8 luncheon of the Red Circle of Washington, DC.

The Sherlockians of Baltimore issued their second annual volume of The Newspapers. Edited by the 6th Garrideb, Greg Ruby, who also authored Buster Keaton’s World War I Military Service and Fort McHenry. Ruby also assisted John Baesch in penning Von Bork’s Man in Baltimore. Ross Davies wrote A Grand Game Introduction, or the Rise and Demise of “Sherlock Holmes.” James C. O’Leary, the 28th Garrideb, contributed the essay Riding The Lost Special From The Reichenbach Falls To The Valley Of Fear. Ira Brad Matetsky, the 49th Garrideb, composed Sherlock Holmes in the Baltimore Newspapers. Copies can be ordered HERE.

Matetsky is also the Werowance of the Wolfe Pack, the Nero Wolfe Literary Society. The Wolfe Pack met at the Greenbriar in Sulphur Springs, WV in April for a re-creation of the French and American Dinners from Too Many Cooks by Rex Stout. Ross Davies delivered a keynote presentation, Too Few Cookbooks, here as well.

That’s a lot of activities and accomplishments by our intrepid group. If you have some new to share, drop a quick note to the editor and we’ll include it in the next update.

One Response to Garridebs in the News – August 2018

  1. O’Leary was on IHOSE 150 talking about some TV show. Tried to listen twice and fell asleep both times. I’d recommend it to insomniacs.
