More Sherlockian Winners of the National Medal of the Arts

“Since then I have been honoured …”

– His Last Bow (LAST)

Shortly after mailing out our last notice of new posts on our website, I received a note from the 13th Garrideb, Peter E. Blau, that there were other Sherlockian-related recipients of the National Medal of the Arts.

Noted theatrical musical composer Stephen Sondheim was presented the National Medal for the Arts by President Clinton at a White House ceremony on January 10, 1997. Sonhdheim did the music and lyrics for The Madam’s Song  also referred to as I Never Do Anything Twice for the 1976 film of The Seven-Per-Cent Solution.

Sondheim was also presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom on November 27, 2015 by President Obama in a White House Ceremony. This was the same ceremony where Steven Spielberg, the Executive Producer of the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes, recieved his Presidential Medal of Freedom. You can read about the ceremony and more about the Presidential Medal of Freedom HERE .

In 2000, the theatrical producer Harold Prince was presented with the National Medal of the Arts. Prince directed the Broadway musical production of Baker Street. The play premiered at The Broadway Theatre on February 16, 1965 and there was a total of 311 shows.

The opening night cast included Fritz Weaver, Peter Sallis, Martin Gabel, Inga Swenson, Virginia Vestoff, Teddy Green, and, in small supporting roles, Tommy Tune and Christopher Walken in their Broadway debuts.

Arthel “Doc” Watson was an Grammy award-winning bluegrass guitarist, songwriter, and singer. He was presented the National Medal of the Arts by President Clinton at a White House ceremony on September 29, 1997.
