1986 Mardi Gras Doubloons from the Krewe of Amor

1986 Mardi Gras Doubloons from the Krewe of Amor

“The French have a very neat way of putting these things.”

– The Sign of The Four (SIGN)

The Krewe of Amor was formed in 1968 and paraded through the St. Bernard parish of New Orleans on the Friday before Fat Tuesday. However, the membership of the krewe declined over the years. Amor held its last parade in 1992. A local newspaper, The Times-Picayune, quoted the krewe’s captain, Jan Loiacono as saying, “I could not put on a parade with 62 members. I need at least 50 more people. Last year we had 125. Each year it has been getting less and less.”

The theme of Amor’s 1986 parade was GAMES WE LOVE TO PLAY. The design of that year’s doubloons featured games of chance and for some reason, Sherlock Holmes.

A total of 9 different items were issued for Amor in 1986 – 6 different color aluminum doubloons, along with medals in bronze, multi-color bronze and silver.
