Sherlocko the Monk: The Case of the Phony Nickel (April 12, 1911)

“… he had given her what looked like a bad florin.”

– The Adventure of the Crooked Man (CROO)

We’ve shared a few installments of Sherlocko The Monk, a comic strip drawn by Gus Mager from 1910 to 1913 in the Hearst newspapers of the era. We are pleased to share another of these comic strips, The Case of the Phony Nickel, that was published on April 12, 1911 in The Buffalo Enquirer. Enjoy!

By the way, this is what was circulating as a nickel in 1911. The Buffalo nickel would be introduced in 1913. This is the Liberty Head or “V” nickel that was designed by Charles E.Barber and introduced in 1883.
